A wild day of low scores settled on Essex Golf and Country Club in LaSalle, Ontario, for the 47th Annual Williamson Cup Matches. The individual medalist and team records were shattered in the process.
Led by Denny McCarthy, the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association finished 25-under 401 and ran away with the 36-hole competition. The Syracuse District Golf Association finished 24 strokes back at 1-under 425.
The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association finished 27-over 453 and finished in eighth place in the ten team competition.
The tournament is college format with the low three scores of four counting each round.
McCarthy finished 14-under 128 on scores of 63 and 65 and captured medalist honors. His first round score of 63 tied the course record at Essex. McCarthy did not make a bogey in either round, and his second round score of 65 included a double bogey on the first hole, the tenth of his round.
WMGA Teammate Jordan Sweet would have broken the individual scoring record while posting 7-under 135. Every player in the top ten finished at even par 142 or better.
Garrett Browning led the WPGA team and finished T-12th with an 8-over 150. 2009 WPGA Junior Champion Darren Simons finished one stroke back at 9-over 153. Justin Miller posted 12-over 154 for a T-30th, and Eric Urda finished T-39th after posting 17-over 159.
Teams have been representing the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association at the Williamson Cup since 1968 and the Association has not yet had the WPGA name etched on the Williamson Cup.
2010 WPGA Junior and C.R. Miller Match Play Invitational champion Tommy Leech represented the Pennsylvania Golf Association and recorded 16-over 158 to finish T-36th. Pennsylvania teammate and C.R. Miller runner-up Connor Garrity posted 2-over 144 to finish 12th.
