Knapp and Smith equal ancient record

With Sean Knapp, Oakmont, reaching the semi-finals in the USGA Mid-Amateur and Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh, making it to the finals, one has to wonder if anything like this has ever occurred in the history of Western Pennsylvania golf. The answer is yes, 108 years ago.

In the 1902 US Amateur at The Glenview Club near Chicago, D.P. Fredericks, Oil City, reached the semi-finals, while Eben Byers, Pittsburgh, advanced to the finals. Fredericks and Byers played in the semis, with Byers winning. Byers lost the final, lost again in the 1903 final, then won the championship in 1905.

Knapp, who lost to 1996 USGA Amateur Public Links champion Tim Hogarth in the final, 2 & 1, could have made the final an all Western Pennsylvania final with a victory, as he and Smith are on the opposite side of the draw.
