Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh, successfully defended his title in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Atlantic Golf Club with a 7-and-5 victory over Tim Hogarth. His victory ties Jay Sigel with the most victories all-time in the championship.

Smith won titles in 2003, 2009, and 2010.

In the last year, Smith has won two Mid-Amateur titles, played on the victorious U.S. Walker Cup Team, and helped Pennsylvania win the USGA State Team Championship with Sean Knapp and Mike Van Sickle.

Smith led the 36-hole final match 5-up after the first 18 holes and got to 7-up after 21 holes until he closed the match on the 13th hole. Smith won the 2009 title 7-and-6 over Tim Spitz at Kiawah Island Club after being up eight after the first 18 holes.

In the six matches it took to capture the championship, excluding the first 18-holes of the finals, Smith reached the 18th hole only once with a 1-up victory in the Round of 16 over John Engler of Augusta, GA.

Sean Knapp, Oakmont, advanced to the semi-finals for the second time in the last three years before falling to Hogarth 2- and-1.
