2012 Father & Son champions, Joe & Marc Ruby
Each August the West Penn Golf Association Championship season turns to team play. Players get the opportunity to compete with a teammate and in some cases that teammate must be family.
The 89th West Penn Father & Son Championship kicked off August team competition at Chartiers Country Club. A field of 39 teams started the day attempting to become the 2012 Father & Son Champions. At the end of the 18 hole competition Joe & Marc Ruby’s one-under par core of 69 was good enough to avoid the three way tie for second place at even par 70 with the likes of the father & son combinations of the Salera’s, Fairman’s & Forese’s. Congratulations to the Ruby’s for their gross score victory in the competition. Doug & Dave Schwimer captured the Net Father & Son Championship with a 4 stroke victory.
Just two days after the Father & Son Championship concluded, the West Penn Brothers Championship was underway at its traditional site, Shannopin Country Club. 20 of the past 30 Brothers Champions were represented in the field but it was a new brother’s team that would make its mark on this day. Rob & Mark Cimarolli would cruise to a three shot victory with a six under par round of 65 to claim their first trophy in Brothers competition.
2012 Four-Ball champions, Jesse Rager & Derek Hayes
The West Penn Four-Ball Championship took place at Green Oaks Country Club on August 20th. A very strong field of teams began the 36 hole competition vying to become the 71st West Penn Four-Ball Champion. A host of teams set the stage for an afternoon shootout with six teams within two shots of the lead after round one. It was one pairing of teams that still couldn’t get enough, even after 36 holes of play. Ronald & David DeNunzio (66-64), multiple WPGA team competition champions, paired with Jesse Rager & Derek Hayes (67-63) both teams came in with twelve under par scores of 130. After playing 36 holes together it would only take one more hole to settle this day long battle. On the first hole of a sudden death playoff, the Hayes/Rager team holed a long birdie to become this year’s West Penn Four-Ball Champions.
Not quite as tightly contested as Championship Four-Ball, the Senior Four-Ball Championship also took place at Green Oaks CC on August 20th. After being one stroke off the lead following the morning round, Jim Crawford & Perry Graciano blistered the course with a six under 65 in afternoon play to claim a five stroke victory over Bill Baloh & Joe Corsi.
2012 Williamson Cup Team
In other August team competition juniors Tom Nettles (2012 WPGA Junior Champ), Brent Rodgers (2011 WPGA Junior Champ), Matthew Moore & William Wears represented the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association team in the 2012 Williamson Cup played at Fieldstone GC in Deleware on August 13th. The WPGA team competed against nine other Golf Association teams throughout the Northeast.
