Nathan Smith plays a shot at the West Penn Amateur

With his victory in the 2012 USGA Mid-Amateur that concluded on September 14, Nathan Smith, who also won the Mid-Am in '03, '09, and '10, joins a group of fifteen golfers that have won at least four USGA titles in the same competition.

They are Willie Anderson, Open, Joanne Carner, Women's Amateur, (5), Carolyn Cudone, Senior Women's Amateur; (5), Ben Hogan, Open, Bob Jones, Open and Amateur (the only golfer to have won two different titles four times), Jack Nicklaus, Open, Ellen Port, Women's Mid-Amateur; Dorothy Porter, Senior Women's Amateur, Betsy Rawls, Women's Open, Ann Sander, Senior Women's Amateur, Carole Semple Thompson, Senior Women's Amateur, Jerome Travers, Amateur; Glenna Collett Vare, Women's Amateur; (6), and Micky Wright, Women's Open.

It's likely Carol Semple Thompson has either played with or met every woman on this list with her. She is the only player to have won USGA championships four years in a row, 1999-2002. Pittsburgh's Carl Kauffmann won three straight Amateur Public Links, 1927-29.

The last male to win four prior to Smith is Jack Nicklaus with his 1980 US Open win at Baltusrol. Ellen Port won her fourth Women's Mid-Amateur last year, and she just won her first Senior Women's Amateur.

The eras:
1901-1935 - Anderson, Jones, Travers, Vare;
1948-1983 - Carner, Cudone, Hogan, Nicklaus, Porter, Rawls, Sander, Wright
21st century - Port, Smith, Semple-Thompson
