Nathan Smith tees off in the 2012 Spring Stroke Play Championship
With a 68-67 - 135, Nathan Smith won the Spring Stroke Play Championship at Pittsburgh Field Club by eight strokes over runner-up Gregor Meyer. This is Smith's sixth title in the last nine times the championship has been conducted, and he is now among the leaders with victories in a single WPGA championship.
Smith has recorded 21 victories in WPGA championships with fifteen individual and six team titles. In addition to the six in the Spring Stroke Play, he has five victories in the Fred Brand Foursomes with Sean Knapp, four in the Amateur from 2007-2010, two in the Mid-Amateur and one each in the Open, Boys, C.R. Miller Match Play and Four-Ball with Scott Phillis.
The record for titles in an individual Association championship is eight and is held by William C. Fownes in the Amateur and Knapp in the Mid-Amateur. Knapp has also won seven Amateurs. Joining Smith with six is Eben Byers and Jack Benson who won six Amateurs each.
Leading the way in partners championships is Knapp with 15 Fred Brand Foursomes titles. Knapp won eight with Jeff Schroeder, five with Smith and two with Steve Fuhrer. Chick & Rob Wagner have won ten Brothers titles, followed by George & Jack Benson with eight. J.W. Oliver won eight Father & Son titles partnered with his father and two different sons over four decades from 1930 to 1962.
