A contingent of 34 professionals and 44 amateurs will compete in the 2013 PNC West Penn Open Championship June 17-18 on the Mystic Rock Course at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, PA.
Defending champion Dan Thompson has won three Opens in the past six years. His record over a decade or less rivals such all-time greats as Jock Hutchinson, Perry DelVecchio and Johnny Bulla in the championship's record book. Hutchinson won five titles from 1909-15. DelVecchio also won five titles from 1927-35. And Bulla captured three titles from 1949-52.
Also entered is Roy Vucinich, whose five wins span 28 years from 1977-2005. Former champions Rob McClellan, 2012, Kevin Shields, 2010, Rick Stimmel, 2002, John Aber, 1999, Arnold Cutrell, 1990 and Chuck Scally, 1988, are also in the field.
Qualifying rounds at Ebensburg CC, Wildwood GC and Wanango GC identified 43 players who joined the 35 exempt players in the championship. Mystic Rock will play around 7000 yards each round. The field plays two rounds on June 17 and the low 32 and ties advance to the third and final round on June 18. The combined purse, cash for professionals and merchandise certificates for amateurs, will be in the $35,000 range.
