Six Western Pennsylvania golfers have competed on USGA Walker Cup teams and three have competed on Curtis Cup teams.

The Walker Cup Team members include William C. Fownes in 1922 & 1924, S. Davidson Herron in 1923, Jim Simons in 1971, Frank Fuhrer, III, and Dick VonTacky in 1980, and Nathan Smith in 2009, 2011 and 2013.

The Curtis Cup team members include Janie Fassinger in 1970, Judy Oliver in 1978, 1980 and 1982, and Carol Semple Thompson competed 12 times from 1974-2002.

When Smith defeated Nathan Kimsey, England, 4&3, in this year's Walker Cup Match at National Golf Links of America, Southampton, New York, he became only the second player from the area to win a singles match in the Walker Cup. The other was Fuhrer, who defeated England's Philip Walton, 4&2, in 1980 at Cypress Point Club, Pebble Beach, California.

In the first Walker Cup Match in 1922 also at National Golf Links of America, William C. Fownes lost to famed British golf writer Bernard Darwin, 3&1. Darwin, who was covering the match, was added to the team when a Great Britain & Ireland player was unable to compete due to an injury.
