Two golfers with roots in Southwest Pennsylvania and the Big Ten Conference recorded significant showings last weekend.

On the Symetra Tour, Waynesburg’s Rachel Rohanna won her first event by shooting 71-66-74 - 211 during the Guardian Retirement Championship played at Sara Bay CC in Sarasota, Florida. Her victory moved her to fourth place on the Symetra Tour money list with just under $25,000. The top ten receive LPGA privileges for the following season. Rohanna, twice recipient of the Association’s Frank B. Fuher, III, Award as the area’s outstanding college player, was a two-time All Big Ten player while competing for Ohio State University.

Washington native Steve Wheatcroft, winner of the 2004 West Penn Open, shot 72-66-69-65 - 272 at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, good for a twelfth place tie and just over $115,000 in winnings. Wheatcroft has enjoyed his best start on the PGA Tour this season in four tries. The Zurich finish is his second best this season, and his winnings, just short of $620,000 are good for 87th on the money list. The top 125 retain playing privileges for the next season. Wheatcroft played college golf at Indiana University once receiving All Big Ten honors.
