The seventh hole at St. Clair Country Club, host of the 2015 West Penn Amateur Championship
A total of 194 contestants have entered this year’s West Penn Amateur with the championship scheduled for June 8-9 at St. Clair Country Club. This is the highest number of Amateur entries other than 1999 and 2011 when the championship was contested at Oakmont Country Club.
In 2006, the competition attracted 192 when Fox Chapel Golf Club hosted the Amateur.
Four qualifying rounds over the next two weeks will identify 52 players. Each will join 26 contestants exempt from preliminary qualifying for a starting field of 78 at St. Clair.
On May 27 at Latrobe Elks Golf Club in Latrobe, 42 will compete for 13 spots.
On June 1 at Lake Shore Country Club in Erie, ten will compete for three spots.
On June 1 at Hill Crest Country Club in Lower Burrell, 41 will compete for twelve spots.
On June 3 at Lone Pine Country Club in Washington, 75 will compete for 24 spots.
Defending champion Trent Karlik, McKees Rocks, cannot compete due to scheduling issues. Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh, who won four straight Amateurs, 2007-10, will not play due to competing in the U.S. Open Sectional.
The strong field is headed by multiple Amateur champions Sean Knapp, Oakmont, (seven), and David Brown, Upper St. Clair (three), plus last year’s runner up Arnold Cutrell, Greensburg, who won the 1990 West Penn Open and three West Penn Mid-Amateurs.
Tim Bowers, McMurray, this year’s Public Links champion, Darren Kowalski, Bethel Park, the 2013 Mid-Amateur champion, Greg Podufal, Erie, 2012 Amateur champion, and Rick Stimmel, Pittsburgh, winner of the 1997 Amateur and 2002 West Penn Open, are also entered.
St. Clair will play to par 72 in the 6900 yards range for each round. On June 8, all players will play two rounds with the low 32 returning on the second day for the third and final round.
St. Clair has hosted the 2012 West Penn Open and the 1985 U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Championship.
