Wexford native Mike Van Sickle was in excellent position to secure Web.com privileges next year for the first time after opening with 66-71–137. During the second round he rallied on the back nine from a three-hole stretch that he played in 4-over par to get back to even.
The competition was played at PGA National Golf Club, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, (Champions and Fazio Courses), December 10-13.
Van Sickle won the West Penn Open Championship in 2013 and 2105.
During the final round three bad swings resulted in three double-bogeys and indifferent putting were costly over the weekend as Van Sickle recorded 74-77. The back nine on the Champions Course Sunday was particularly costly as VanSickle recorded 5-over 40.
Van Sickle finished 2-over 288 to finish t-74. The top 45 players and ties receive full Web.com status. The qualifying number fell at 2-under 284.
Van Sickle’s 2016 schedule will include Monday qualifying For Web.com competitions. In addition to winning two West Penn Opens, his outstanding college career included twelve victories at Marquette University, the most ever by a college golfer from Western Pennsylvania. He received the 2009 Byron Nelson Award given to the country’s outstanding collegiate player. Van Sickle also was a three-time recipient of the Association’s Frank Fuhrer, III, Award presented to the area’s outstanding collegiate golfer.
As an amateur Van Sickle won the 2007 and 2008 Pennsylvania Open Championships. He also advanced to the third round in the 2009 US Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club, Tulsa, Oklahoma. He began his professional golf career in 2009.
