2004 WPGA President, Fred Gibbons, wearing the yellow WPGA tie
Fred Gibbons greatly enjoyed his connection with the WPGA as evidenced by his continuing involvement with the association 12 years after being president. From 1993-2004, he served on the WPGA Executive Committee, and he served as president in 2004.
His three children referred to the WPGA as the “yellow tie club,” as Fred always wore his yellow WPGA tie to association meetings. When his children saw the tie they would say, “Dad has a yellow tie club meeting today.”
“Our committed focus on membership services are in large part due to Fred’s leadership,” Terry Teasdale, WPGA Executive Director, said. “His slogan was ‘membership is everybody’s business.’ We are a better Association for his dedicated service to the game. He was a great man, and he will be missed greatly.”
Mr. Gibbons died on Monday, May 23, 2016. He was a licensed realtor for 44 years, and was a broker for RE/MAX Real Estate Services and owner of Gibbons Agency Insurance in Elizabeth Township.
A long-time member of Youghiogheny Country Club, he won the inaugural West Penn Mid-Amateur Championship in 1985. He was proud to have won this championship, and he will always be remembered with his name permanently etched on the trophy that is on display at Oakmont Country Club.
“Fred Gibbons was a committed volunteer. His concern was always for making things better without worrying much about who got the credit,” said Jeff Rivard, former WPGA Executive Director. “His understanding of the business and culture of the game was top notch. Fred was a guy that was a pleasure to work with or for. I miss him already.”
In addition to his contributions to membership services, Fred helped refine Association governance procedures. A long-time member of the WPGA Green Committee, he was instrumental in the creation and development of the WPGA Green Operations Survey that is distributed annually to WPGA Member Clubs.
The WPGA Green Operations Survey was awarded the Golden Tee Award for Education and Player Development by the International Association of Golf Administrators in 2015.
