Nathan Smith with the John Birmingham Trophy after winning his third West Penn Mid-Am.
Nathan Smith has made his mark on Mid-Amateur tournaments over the years.
On Tuesday at his home course of Wildwood Golf Club he did do so again in the West Penn Mid-Amateur Championship.
The firm rolling terrain of Wildwood tested the area’s finest golfers age 25 and over. There were just seven rounds under par over the thirty-six hole competition.
Rick Stimmel fired a 4-under 68 in the morning and held a one-stroke lead over Smith and a two stroke lead over Mike Marron heading into the afternoon round.
Doug Pfingstler of Dubois recorded a hole-in-one on the 225 yard 8th hole on his way to a first round 73.
Michael Garcia turned in the round of the afternoon with a 68.
It was the steady play of Smith that could not be overcome by the field. His afternoon 71 gave him the championship and a two-stroke victory over Marron and Stimmel.
This was the third West Penn Mid-Am victory for Smith and his 25th overall Association victory. He bookended the WPGA individual championship season by winning the season opening Spring Stroke Play at St. Clair and the 31st Mid-Amateur.
