Katie Miller, Jeannette, advanced to the quarterfinals in the 30th U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at The Kahkwa Club in Erie this week, her best finish among the eight USGA championships in which she has competed.

Miller earned a tenth seed in stroke play qualifying in the 64-player match play draw with rounds of 75-76—151. While advancing to the quarterfinals she defeated Tiffany Maurycy of Denver 5 & 3 in the first round, Kristyl Underman of McDonough, Ga., 1-up in the second round, and 2009 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, Marta Leach, of Hebron, Ky., 7 & 5 in the round of sixteen.

Miller’s finish at Kahkwa is the best showing by an area golfer in USGA championships this season.

In the quarterfinals on September 14, Miller faced Julia Potter of Indianapolis, in what may have been the best played match of the championship. The match was all square after eighteen holes, with each player posting a 2-under 70. In extra holes, Potter prevailed on the 21st hole.

In the final match, Potter went on to defeat fellow co-medalist, Shannopin Johnson of Norton, Mass., 2 & 1, to win her second U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur title. She also won the 2013 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, where she was also the medalist in stroke play qualifying.

Miller played college golf at University of North Carolina, 2004-07. She won the 2007 and 2015 Pennsylvania Women’s Amateur Championships, and won the 2016 Women’s International Four-Ball with partner Charlotte Daughan. She also reached the quarterfinals in the 2015 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship with Amber Marsh Elliott, and again reached the quarterfinals this year with Kristin Obush.

Miller was reinstated to amateur golf in 2013.
