Over the last ten, the
Scholarship Committee introduced three scholarships named after prominent
members of the local golf community. One scholarship has been in place since
1959. Each scholarship is a one-year
award.
The Fred Brand, Jr. Scholarship has been
established by the committee to honor the commitment and contributions that Mr.
Brand made to the establishment and growth of the WPGA Scholarship Fund. Mr.
Brand was one of the founding members of both the Scholarship and Caddie Welfare
Committees while involved with the WPGA, a long time supporter of the program,
and was an alumnus of
Pennsylvania
State
University
. In 1997, Mr. Brand was awarded the Bob Jones Award by the United States Golf
Association. The award is presented annually in recognition of distinguished
sportsmanship in golf.
The Stan Wiel Scholarship has been endowed by
Chartiers Country Club to honor the club’s long time Golf Professional who was
committed to its caddie program and his profession. The scholarship is funded by
the proceeds from the club’s annual Stan Wiel Memorial Pro-Am held at
Chartiers each year. Many employees of Mr. Wiel have since gone on to successful
careers in the golf industry, with a good number becoming golf professionals.
The James Malone, Jr. Scholarship has been
endowed by the late Mr. Malone’s son, James Malone, III, to honor his father.
Mr. Malone, Jr. was a member of the Pittsburgh Field Club and served as
Allegheny County District Attorney. He also served as President of the
Pennsylvania Manufactures Association for many years.
The C.K. Robinson Scholarship was established
in Mr. Robinson’s will of 1959 to provide tuition assistance to caddies who
were undergraduates preparing to enter medical school in
Pennsylvania
. Mr. Robinson was committed to both the Scholarship and the
Caddie Welfare Committees while serving as an Executive
Committee member of the Association, and was instrumental in the
establishment and perpetuation of both committees. |
