Penn
State, Marquette in NCAA Central Regional (5/06/08)
Penn State’s three wins were obviously more important than
finishing last in the Big Ten as the NCAA assigned the Nittany
Lions to the Central Regional, to be played May 15-17 in
Columbus, Ohio, at the famed Ohio State University’s Scarlet
Course. Expected to play for PSU are seniors Robert Rohanna,
Waynesburg, and Harvin Groft, State College. The team is seeded
#13. |

Association News in Brief
Michael
Smith, Sunnehanna, resigned from the WPGA Executive Committee,
the organization’s governing body, due to increasing personal
and business concerns, just prior to the Spring Meeting. Smith,
who is now President of Sunnehanna, was elected to the Executive
Committee last Fall during the WPGA Annual Meeting. He will not
be replaced until the next Annual Meeting on September 29. The
WPGA By-Laws state the Executive Committee shall consist of no
fewer than 16 or more than 22 members. Smith’s resignation
leaves the roster at eighteen members, four officers and
fourteen committee members.
The WPGA’s
2007 financial statements showed another solid year. Years
2005-07 are the three strongest in consecutive order in the last
25-30. Authorized representatives of Member Clubs can receive
the 2007 Financial Statements and Related Information via
written request.
The
Association’s “care package” of opening season materials has
recently arrived at the WPGA’s 124 Member Clubs: Member
Information booklet (Directory), course rating posters, and
championship schedules. This is yet another sign of spring! |

Four
Trophies Refurbished
The USGA’s
mission statement refers to the game’s “ancient and honorable
traditions.” Since the WPGA was founded in 1899, the organization has a
few of its own. Last year, the Championship Committee determined it was
time to repair the oldest and most valuable trophies. The first one
worked on was an exception—the Mid-Am trophy purchased about ten years
ago. The championship started in 1985, but the silver trophy from
England is considerably older than that. Last spring the trophy was
straightened by a silversmith in Virginia.
Four more were
recently repaired--mostly bumping out dents, strengthening their bases
and other structural weaknesses, straightening and polishing, by area
silversmith Thomas Sandretto, Turtle Creek, PA. His work description
mentions chemical removal (oxide and sulfide), removing solder from
previous repairs, refining surfaces, and application of wax.
These four trophies
recently finished are historic.
William
C. Fownes Trophy (Amateur)
Harry C. Milholland Vase (Open)
Percy H. Preston Memorial Trophy (Junior)
Thomas J. Jamison Vase (Senior)
Although the Open and
Amateur began in 1899, it appears to Sandretto that the Amateur, Open,
and Junior trophies were all purchased in the 1920’s, which makes sense
because the Junior started in 1921, with the Preston Memorial set in a
World War I theme. The Senior began in 1929. |
Sean Knapp and Nathan Smith
win Fred Brand Foursomes
After losing in a playoff last year, the duo of Sean Knapp and
Nathan Smith won their fourth Fred Brand Foursomes in the past
six years at Longue Vue on April 24. Recovering after a first
round 74, the team shot even par 70 in the afternoon totaling
144. They edged Peter Dellovade/Larry Lis by one stroke,
72-73—145.
Results
This is Knapp’s fourteenth victory in the Fred Brand. In
addition to partnering with Nathan Smith four times, he and Jeff
Schroeder, who has since moved to Connecticut, won eight titles,
plus Knapp won the other two with Steve Fuhrer. His fourteen
wins have taken place in the last 22 years, with the first in
1986 with Fuhrer. |
Rain
reschedules Champions
Wet conditions forced a rescheduling of the Tournament of
Champions. After being washed out on April 28, the event has
been moved to June 2, and players not previously entered may do
so until May 21. |
88 in two
USGA Open Locals
35 golfers, 24 amateurs and 11 professionals, will play for two
spots in Sectionals during the USGA Open Local Qualifying Round
at the Chestnut Ridge Resort’s Tom’s Run Course on May 12. On
May 15, a field of 53, 27 amateurs and 26 professionals, will
play for four spots at Quicksilver Golf Club in Midway.
The total of
88 is just under half of the 182 who tried last year when the
Open was held at Oakmont. Jon Mills, Indiana, advanced through
the Indiana CC Local and a Sectional in Chicago to Oakmont. He
missed the cut by one stroke. This year’s field is down
somewhat as the two Locals the WPGA conducts for the USGA
typically draw 100-110 contestants. |

The 2008 active
season began on April 01. All scores played in Western
Pennsylvania from this date until October 31, 2008 are to be
posted fro handicap purposes. Please review the
2008 Revision Schedule to see when your Handicap Index will
be updated.
The
USGA Handicap System, 2008-2011, was published on January 1,
2008. One important change in the USGA Handicap System is the
revision to peer review. There will now be two types of scoring
records--Complete and General. This will affect how records are
displayed on GHIN.com.
A complete scoring record includes Used, Type, Date (mm/dd/yy),
Score, CR/Slope, Diff., and Course Name. A complete scoring
record can only be viewed if the individual uses a player's GHIN
number under Handicap Lookup. A General scoring record will
display the same information as a Complete scoring record,
except that it will exclude the specific date (mm/yy) and course
name. Any individual using the last name lookup and state
feature will be provided a General scoring record.
GHIN.com has
been redesigned to more include the golfer. Each golfer that has
an active GHIN number can now create a profile for the eGolfer
Service. Once enrolled, you will be able to view your scoring
record, keep track of statistics, and additional offerings.
If you are not taking advantage to the eRevision Service that is
offered by the GHIN Service at no charge, please enroll today.
On each revision you will be sent information regarding each
update. Over 9,000 WPGA Members presently receive their USGA
Handicap Index through the eRevision Service.
The first three WPGA Handicap Chair Certification Seminars for
2008 have been completed. Thirty-three individuals representing
28 Member Clubs have successfully completed the program.
Representatives from WPGA Member Clubs may also complete the
program online at the
USGA website. Additionally, 35 Member Clubs have submitted
the WPGA Club Licensing Agreement. Both are club requirements in
order to use the USGA Handicap System. For more information
please contact the Association.
The Association's Course Rating Committee will be busy this
season. The WPGA will start rating golf clubs that are members
of the Erie District Golf Association for the first time. We
expect to rate approximately 35 golf clubs throughout Western
Pennsylvania this season.
Please contact Terry
Teasdale if you have any questions or need assistance. |

Young Receives Bill Mac Award
Tom Young,
Wildwood, a Club Rep since the program restarted in the 1990’s,
was honored with the Bill Mac Award at Club Rep Day at Green
Oaks on April 17. Wildwood’s General Manager Steve Gonzalez
accepted the award that day at Young was unable to attend,
ironically the first Club Rep Day he had ever missed. Wildwood
then presented Young with the award upon his return.
