Palmer Cup—WPGA 8 ˝; Tri-State PGA 8 ˝; first time the amateur team did not lose to the Tri-State PGA.

Marino Parascenzo, Ellwood City, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s lead golf writer for nearly forty years, received the PGA of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Pennsylvania Golf Association—2008 Champions from Western Pennsylvania.  Arnold Cutrell, Jay Sigel Match Play; Paul Schlachter, Senior Match Play; Gregor Orlando, Junior Amateur; Mike VanSickle, Amateur and Open; William Smith, Mid-Amateur. Sean Knapp, Art Wall Major.

Paul Schlachter, Bridgeville (Nevillewood)—Senior Player of the Year, fifth year in a row, nationally ranked in senior amateur golf.

Jared Schmader, Cooperstown—plays for Clarion University, won three collegiate tournaments this Fall.

Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh (Wildwood)—amateur Player of the Year, first to win West Penn Amateur and West Penn Open in the same year since Jim Masserio in 1969.  Can anyone name the other two, and what the four have in common?

Carol Semple Thompson, Sewickley (Allegheny)—inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame, captained victorious USA Curtis Cup team, third round, USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur, quarterfinal, USGA Senior Women’s Amateur.

Trophies—four of the Association’s most venerable underwent significant repairs this year.  They are for the Open (Harry C. Millholland), Amateur (William C. Fownes), Junior (Percy H. Preston), and Senior (Thomas J. Jamison).  This work was possible due to a donation from Mark Miller, Venetia (St. Clair), whose funds were also used to purchase new junior trophies last year for the C.R. Miller Match Play and both Boys trophies, Skip Potts, 13-15, and Jim Simons (13 and younger).

Mike VanSickle. Gibsonia (Treesdale)—winner of Pennsylvania Amateur and Pennsylvania Open, Frank Fuhrer, III, Collegiate Player of the Year, two collegiate tournament victories this Fall, plays for Marquette University.
