A look back--2008
This year has
been a busy and record breaking one. Note the following
highlights.
George
Anderson, Coraopolis (Shadow Lakes)—begins terms as WPGA
President, September 29, 2008.
David Axson
conducts Club Leadership Workshop at South Hills CC, with 45
clubs and more than 120 in attendance, the largest meeting
turnout in recent memory.

New Castle—term as WPGA President concludes, September 29, 2008.
Jim
Bryan/Arnold Cutrell—shoot 61 in WPGA Four-Ball at Treesdale, a
new 18-hole record.
Ron Coleman,
Erie—wins Erie District GA EDGA Mid-Am, Match Play, and WPGA
Public Links for second straight year.
Dave DeNezza,
Greensburg (Totteridge)—wins WPGA Senior Amateur, reaches third
round of USGA Senior Amateur.
Sean Knapp,
Oakmont (Longue Vue/St. Jude)—wins sixth WPGA Mid-Amateur,
reaches semi-finals in USGA Mid-Amateur.
Rocco Mediate,
Greensburg, loses to Tiger Woods in thrilling play-off for the
US Open at Torrey Pines GC, near San Diego.

Indiana, qualifies for US Open, misses cut at championship.
Palmer Cup—WPGA
8 ˝; Tri-State PGA 8 ˝; first time the amateur team did not lose
to the Tri-State PGA.
Marino
Parascenzo, Ellwood City, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s lead
golf writer for nearly forty years, received the PGA of
America’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Schlachter, Bridgeville (Nevillewood)—Senior Player of the Year,
fifth year in a row, nationally ranked in senior amateur golf.
Jared Schmader,
Cooperstown—plays for Clarion University, won three collegiate
tournaments this Fall.
Nathan Smith,
Pittsburgh (Wildwood)—amateur Player of the Year, first to win
West Penn Amateur and West Penn Open in the same year since Jim
Masserio in 1969. Can anyone name the other two, and what the
four have in common?
South Hills
Country Club—donated $7332 to WPGA Scholarship Fund.
Carol Semple
Thompson, Sewickley (Allegheny)—inducted into World Golf Hall of
Fame, captained victorious USA Curtis Cup team, third round,
USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur, quarterfinal, USGA Senior Women’s
Amateur.
Trophies—four
of the Association’s most venerable underwent significant
repairs this year. They are for the Open (Harry C. Millholland),
Amateur (William C. Fownes), Junior (Percy H. Preston), and
Senior (Thomas J. Jamison). This work was possible due to a
donation from Mark Miller, Venetia (St. Clair), whose funds were
also used to purchase new junior trophies last year for the C.R.
Miller Match Play and both Boys trophies, Skip Potts, 13-15, and
Jim Simons (13 and younger).

Gibsonia (Treesdale)—winner of Pennsylvania Amateur and
Pennsylvania Open, Frank Fuhrer, III, Collegiate Player of the
Year, two collegiate tournament victories this Fall, plays for
