GREENSBURG — There was a good bit of déjà vu in the air Thursday.

For the second straight year, the duos of Arnold Cutrell and Frank Fairman, and Don Erickson and Joe Corsi, linked up to take the two divisions of the 15th WPGA Senior Four-Ball Championship at Hannastown Golf Club.

Cutrell and Fairman claimed the Senior Division, while Erickson and Corsi repeated in the Super-Senior Division.

For Cutrell, the win gives him a hat trick of victories for the season, having already won at Hannastown in April in the first Senior Series event. He also picked up a win in a team competition alongside his son in the WPGA Father & Son Tournament at Diamond Run last month.

“Arnie played great and his putter was hot,” said Fairman, who has known Cutrell for around 30 years. “He made all the tough ones. I finally chipped in a bit, but really, he carried us.”

While Cutrell continues to play regularly and add to an impressive and still-growing resumé in West Penn events, Fairman has been dipping his toe back into the competitive golf waters after stepping away some over the last decade due to injuries.

The union has worked out swimmingly, particularly in this event.

“Once Frank turned senior, he hadn’t really been playing much,” said Cutrell of Fairman, a Punxsutawney resident. “We’ve played together in the past and always had fun, so I reached out to him last year to see if he wanted to team up again.

“We played up at Oak Hill and had success there as Mid-Ams. Even though he hasn’t played much competitively lately, he’s still playing up at Punxsutawney. It’s great to compete together a couple times a year.”

The pair held a one-stroke lead after the first round of the 36-hole, best ball format event, shooting a score of 65. Their number was one better than the duo of Sean Knapp and Rick Stimmel, who finished the event 6-under.

After lunch, and particularly after the turn in their second round, Cutrell and Fairman took off, carding five birdies in the six-hole stretch to build a comfortable lead.

“The second round started slow,” Cutrell said. “We were 1-over at the turn. But then Frank birdied 10, I birdied 11, and Frank birdied 12. We really caught fire on the back nine. Up until then, we were grinding… We just started making putts.”

Bob Crnjarich and Bill Rosemeyer finished 5-under in the Senior Division, taking third place. No other groups in the Senior Division concluded their round under-par on a steamy day at one of the region’s more challenging and well-kept layouts in Hannastown.

“I thought the course was in fantastic shape,” said Fairman. “The greens were rolling great, good speed, and the fairways were really solid. Honestly, it’s better than I remember it.”

In the Super-Senior Division, Erickson and Cutrell also repeated as champions, posting a 3-under score between the two rounds.

“We’re the right age,” joked Corsi, alluding to the dividing line of the Super-Senior Division, set at 65 years old. “They say to find an age bracket where you can beat people. But we played pretty well today. Don’s a super solid player. He doesn’t make any mistakes, and I was fortunate to help him in the second round.”

Erickson is also now a multi-time champion this season in WPGA events, having taken last week’s Senior Series #2 Super-Senior Division.

But it was a late birdie on the 16th hole from Corsi proved to be the difference, separating he and Erickson from Alan English and Robert MacWhinnie following a lengthy deadlock atop the leaderboard.

“It’s hard to get the ball to stop close to the hole here,” said Corsi of the challenging greens at Hannastown. “There’s a lot of undulations. It can go uphill and downhill.”

“You know it’s a tough putting course when you have to be cautious of your uphill putts,” Erickson added. “They can get away from you.

“We both don’t really hit a lot of bad shots. We can get it close to the hole. And that’s the key… It takes the stress level off.”

English and MacWhinnie led after the first 18 holes with a score of 67. Erickson and Corsi, who also won last year’s event at Green Oaks Country Club, shot a 1-under score of 69 in the second round to come from behind.

David Schmitt and Jeff Hovanec, a pair of members at Hannastown, shot even-par to place third.
