Pittsburgh Field Club to host Tuesday's WPGA Spring Stroke Play
By Josh Rowntree, Director of Communications • May 25, 2025
A strong and accomplished field is set to compete at a storied Western Pennsylvania golf course in Tuesday’s 32nd WPGA Spring Stroke Play.
The competition — a 36-hole, single day, stroke play event — began in 1994 as an invitational for club champions. It has since shifted to an expanded field that traditionally includes many of the top amateur players in the region.
That is again the case this year, with multiple WPGA major champions and Players of the Year scheduled to compete.
Nathan Piatt — the reigning WPGA Player of the Year and defending West Penn Amateur champion — as well as 2024 Junior Player of the Year Nick Turowski, will each play Tuesday.
Colton Lusk, who finished as the low scorer in last week’s WPGA Amateur Championship qualifying, will tee off at 9:39 a.m.
Amani D’Ambrosio, who claimed a team victory in this year’s Fred Brand Foursomes Championship, is in the final group of the day. He won the Spring Stroke Play in 2022.
Past champions of the event include 2024 Masters and U.S. Open Low Amateur Neal Shipley (2021), three-time event winners Rick Stimmel and Sean Knapp and nine-time champion Nathan Smith.
Knapp, one of the region’s most accomplished amateur players, will play in a group this year with Brady Moran and Cody Trabert. Stimmel, a former WPGA Player of the Year and reigning Senior Player of the Year, will again be in this year’s field alongside Garrett Browning and Matt Barto.
A year ago, Kevin O’Brien kickstarted the 2024 West Penn golf season with a commanding 7-under performance<>/ at Valley Brook Country Club. O’Brien — a Pittsburgh Field Club member — will be in a group with Bob Crnjarich and Derek Mousseau on Tuesday.
The Spring Stroke Play trophy is named for Jack Benson, who won six West Penn Amateurs from 1934 to 1954.
This will be the third time that the Pittsburgh Field Club has hosted the Spring Stroke play, with Stimmel winning there in 1996 and Smith in 2013.
The Field Club has been in existence since 1882. One of the five founding clubs of the WPGA, it is among the oldest clubs in the country.
Play will begin from two tees at 8:00 a.m.
