JOHNSTOWN — Sunnehanna Country Club will welcome a loaded field of amateur golfers Monday, as they hope to punch tickets to the next round of qualifying for the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship.

The Local Qualifying event will be an 18-hole competition with 12 places in the Final Qualifying stage on the line. Two alternate positions will be earned, as well.

Once advanced, spots will be won in Final Qualifying for the 125th U.S. Amateur, set for August 11-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California.

Several Western Pennsylvanians will compete as part of the 143-player field, with play beginning from two tees at 8:00 a.m. in the first wave of competitors. The second wave of players will tee off at 1:00 p.m.

2025 WPGA Junior Champion Michael Quallich, a 15-year-old, will be the first player to tee off of the first hole Monday morning. The 2024 WPGA Junior Champion, Nick Turowski, will be in the next group.

Chuck Tragesser, who won the 2025 WPGA Spring Stroke Play and earned Low Amateur honors at this month’s 122nd WPGA Open Championship, will tee off at 9:40 a.m.

Nine-time WPGA Amateur champion Sean Knapp will start his round ten minutes prior from the 10th tee.

Reigning WPGA Mid-Amateur champion Ian Bangor will play in the second wave, teeing off at 1:00 p.m. Defending WPGA C.R. Miller champion David Fuhrer will compete in the afternoon wave, as well.

Two years ago, Pittsburgh’s Neal Shipley finished runner-up, earning exemptions into the U.S. Open and Masters Tournament in 2024, where he won Low Amateur honors in each.

Some of golf’s greatest figures have won the U.S. Amateur, including Bobby Jones, who won the vent a record five times. Tiger Woods claimed the title in three straight years, becoming the only player to accomplish that feat.

Jack Nicklaus, Chick Evans, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau are among the major champions who have picked up victories in the U.S. Amateur.
