GREENSBURG — In a familiar refrain throughout the 2025 West Penn golf season, Mother Nature’s interruption stole some of the show Tuesday.

Following a driving rainstorm that blanketed much of Western Pennsylvania, 22 players earned spots in the 40th WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship during qualifying at Totteridge Golf Course.

Pittsburgh native Ryan Costello finished as the lone player under par with a 1-under score of 71, notching four birdies on the day and following up a stellar showing at Latrobe Elks last month in West Penn Am qualifying.

Ray Sandherr and Ryan Cameron both shot 4-over scores of 76 to tie for second place.

Play began at 9 a.m. but was suspended at 11:54 a.m., just before the last two groups of players teed off at the Greensburg course.

Kade Logue, a member at The Country Club of Meadville, was walking down the first fairway when the horns blew to suspend play.

“I hit my first tee shot and got fully drenched,” said Logue, who shot a 5-over 77 to secure a spot in September’s Mid-Amateur Championship. “When I was first out there, the first hole’s right bunker didn’t have a puddle in it, and when I went back out there, it had a massive puddle.”

Heavy rain, accompanied by intermittent lightning, saturated the course, halting play until 2:15 p.m. When the action resumed, the course provided a strong challenge for the field.

“This course plays firm and fast, and it was set up to play firm and fast,” said Logue. “When you’re hitting an extra club, maybe two into some of those pins… it’s tough. And then, when you add water to rough, it can cause the ball to do almost anything.”

For the 45 players who finished their round Tuesday — including those who pushed through in a playoff that featured five players battling for three spots and two alternate positions — a mentality of perseverance took over after the rain came.

“I don’t like to say that I make a double and triple (bogey) in a round very often,” said Logue, with a laugh. “But I made five birdies, including two of the last three (holes). I just had to grind it out. It’s not easy when it gets really wet like that.”

One more qualifying round will take place on August 12 at South Hills Country Club. The qualified players will join exempt golfers in the 40th WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship on September 2 at Green Oaks Country Club.
