FOX CHAPEL — With an expanded format, the WPGA Women’s Amateur Championships are set for Monday at Fox Chapel Golf Club.

The 18th WPGA Women’s Amateur Championship is the top WPGA contest for amateur female golfers in the region and has seen a long list of strong players claim victories in the event throughout its history.

Running concurrently will be the 9th WPGA Senior Amateur Championship, which will also feature a Super-Senior Division. The Senior Division is available for players ages 55 and older, while the Super-Senior Division is for competitors 65 and older.

New to the WPGA championship schedule is the addition of the Inaugural WPGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, which will also run concurrently with the other championships on Monday. The Mid-Amateur is available for players ages 25 and older.

Each age tier of the of the competition will include both gross and net scoring categories, as well.

“The WPGA is excited to welcome such a talented and deep field of players to Fox Chapel Golf Club, which will set a fantastic stage for this major championship,” said Terry Teasdale, executive director of the WPGA. “As we continue to observe nationwide growth in female participation in the game, we are also seeing it locally, and this year’s WPGA Women’s Amateur Championship field is representation of that.”

67 players are scheduled to compete Monday at Fox Chapel Golf Club, which hosted the 6th U.S. Senior Women’s Open last summer.

That number is a sharp increase in participation from a year ago, when 20 players competed across the three divisions, and signifies the substantial growth of female participation in the sport.

Over the last year, the WPGA has welcomed multiple new comeptitions for women to its schedule, including the Women’s Triple Play, Women’s Inter-Club Finals and the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

In the Women’s Amateur Championship division, several prominent players will compete for the title Monday, including reigning WPGA Girls Match Play champion Sophia Severns and reigning WPGA Junior Girls Player of the Year Mya Morgan, who took Net Division honors in the Women’s Amateur Championship a year ago.

The 2024 WPGA Girls Match Play champion, Grace Windfelder, will compete following her freshman season at Fairfield. Several other current and recent collegiate and top high school golfers will battle for the WPGA Women’s Amateur.

Seven players will contend for the newly added Mid-Amateur division, including Katie Miller Gee, who claimed the 2023 WPGA Women’s Amateur Championship, and Nancy Haynes, the winner of the 2024 WPGA Women’s Net Championship.

The largest field will be in the Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, with 37 players scheduled to compete, including amateur golf legend Carol Semple Thompson.

The Sewickley native won the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur four straight years from 1999-2002. She also claimed the 1973 U.S. Women’s Amateur, has won two U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championships and has played on the United States’ Curtis Cup team more than any other player in history.

The recipient of the 2003 Bob Jones Award — the highest honor presented by the USGA — and a 2008 inductee into the World Golf Hall of Fame, Semple Thompson is scheduled to begin her round at 8:20 a.m. Monday.

Current WPGA president Carol Onufro and past WPGA president Claudette Graham — a two-time Super-Senior Women’s Amateur champion — will also be in the field, while defending Super-Senior champion Virginia Ley will again compete.

The Women’s Amateur Championship and the Women’s Mid-Amateur will be two-round competitions of 36 holes on Monday, while the Senior divisions will play 18 holes for their championship.
