VERONA — After three consecutive years of dominance by Connoquenessing Country Club, Oakmont Country Club emerged victorious, capturing the 36th Jamison Cup title in impressive fashion on Monday at Green Oaks Country Club.
The five-player squad of Aiden Bulger, Andrew Friend, Jackson Fricke, Carter Pitcairn, and Tom Nettles combined to shoot 7-under par, edging out Connoquenessing and securing the title in one of Western Pennsylvania’s premier team competitions.
The event, which featured four of the region’s top clubs, highlighted not only the depth of talent among WPGA member clubs but also the increasingly competitive nature of inter-club play.
“I think we had a good mindset going in,” said Pitcairn. “Everyone on the team is a strong player, and we just focused on staying steady and having fun.”
Despite the solid result, Pitcairn noted that the team was feeling the grind of a busy schedule.
“We’ve all been playing a lot of golf recently,” he said. “We were a little banged up and pretty tired this morning, but it was a great team effort.”
Oakmont’s strong showing was paced by standout individual performances, particularly from Andrew Friend, who fired a 4-under par of 67 to help lead the charge.
“I was able to get up and down a few times, and that really helped keep the round together,” said Friend, who claimed the overall individual title. “Out here, if you can find the fairway, you can control your spin and give yourself a lot of good looks.”
Carter Pitcairn and Schlick each carded impressive 3-under scores of 68s, while Jacob Marquardt finished at 1-under, good for fourth place overall. David Strassburger and Jackson Fricke both shot even-par, tying for fifth in the individual standings.
Connoquenessing, which had won the Jamison Cup title the past three years, turned in a solid team performance at even par, leading to a second place finish. Green Oaks Country Club, playing on its home turf, finished third at 6-over, while Sewickley Heights Golf Club came in fourth at 26-over.
Sewickley Heights Win’s Inaugural Women’s Inter-Cup
Monday marked a historic moment for women’s golf in Western Pennsylvania as the WPGA hosted its inaugural Women’s Inter-Club Championship at Green Oaks Country Club and it was Sewickley Heights Golf Club that rose to the occasion.
The six-player team of Caitlin Ross, Colleen Schild, Danielle Proctor, Kathryn Katawczik, Kathy Farrell, and Michelle Mankey combined to post a Stableford stroke play score of 132, securing the championship title in the first edition of the event.
The field featured teams from six WPGA member clubs, including Longue Vue Club, Allegheny Country Club, Diamond Run Golf Club, Oakmont Country Club, and Westmoreland Country Club, each bringing a unique mix of experience and energy to the competition.
Sewickley Heights’ win, according to their players, was a true team performance.
“We kind of ham-and-egged it today,” said Proctor. “Some of our players played really well on the front nine and helped carry the team, and then on the back nine it flipped. The others stepped up and supported the group. It truly was a team effort, and that made it special.”
Proctor also emphasized the camaraderie of the group, noting how important it is for the team to stay connected throughout the season.
“We try to play together as much as we can,” she said. “We’ve got our club championship coming up, so I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone again next weekend.”
On the individual side, it was Westmoreland Country Club’s Jordan Craig-Nyiri who emerged on top.
“I adjusted to the green speed really quickly,” she said. “I felt comfortable on the greens early, and that’s such a big part of scoring well.”
The event was not only a competitive success but also a symbolic one. As the first of its kind under the WPGA umbrella, the Women’s Inter-Club Championship represents a major step forward in expanding opportunities for female golfers in the region.
“Including women in more of these larger events across Western PA is huge,” Proctor said. “There’s only one direction to go from here and that’s up.”
Added Craig-Nyiri: “Being able to compete in team formats like this is so much fun. Our team loves playing together, and I think you could really see that today with how everyone supported one another.”
In the last two seasons, the WPGA has added three competitions for female golfers, including the Women’s Inter-Club Finals, the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship and the Women’s Triple Play, which will be contested next month at Grove City Country Club.
