WHITEHALL — South Hills Country Club will host Tuesday’s WPGA Mid-Amateur Qualifying round, the second of two qualifiers for the prominent West Penn championship event set for next month.
The 40th WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship will be held at Green Oaks Country Club on September 2. To set that field, the WPGA conducts two qualifying rounds, with the first taking place in July at Totteridge Golf Club.
22 players earned spots in the qualifying round at Totteridge, with 21 more spots up for grabs Tuesday at South Hills.
Those qualified players will join exempt players in the 40th WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship.
Play will begin at 8:00 a.m., with starting times running through 10:50 on the first tee. The format is 18 holes of stroke play.
The Mid-Amateur Championship is for players 25 years of age and older.
Last year, Ian Bangor won his third WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship with an impressive even-par performance at Butler Country Club. It was the third win for Bangor in the event, and second in three years.
Started in 1985, the WPGA Mid-Amateur is 36 holes of stroke play. It has become one of the strongest amateur competitions in the region and has seen numerous players go on to have success at the national stage.
Four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Nathan Smith has also won the WPGA Mid-Amateur four times.
Sean Knapp has claimed victories in the competition a record nine times, matching his mark in the WPGA Amateur Championship.
Arnold Cutrell, like Bangor, has won the Mid-Amateur Championship three times, as well.
