WPGA announces addition of Inaugural Mixed Championship

Entering its 127th season of administering golf competitions throughout the region, the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association has added a new competition to its schedule in 2026.

The WPGA will welcome male and female golfers for the Inaugural WPGA Mixed Championship on August 10 at Sunnehanna Country Club.

“With the growth of the game throughout the region and nationwide, it is vital that we continue to offer competitive opportunities for players in Western Pennsylvania,” said Terry Teasdale, WPGA executive director. “By adding the Inaugural WPGA Mixed Championship, we are also providing a unique opportunity for male and female golfers to compete together, as a team.”

The Inaugural WPGA Mixed Championship will be a four-ball competition, with teams represented by one male and one female player.

Four-ball, one of the game’s most common forms of team play, allows golfers to play their own ball through the entirety of each hole, with the better score being selected towards the team’s overall mark.

Teams will compete in a single round, 18-hole championship to determine an overall winner. The competition will also feature a net division that accounts for a participating player’s Handicap Index®, allowing for multiple winning teams.

2026 marks the third straight year that the WPGA has added at least one new competition, with each allowing female golfers a new avenue to compete.

In 2024, the WPGA added the Women’s Triple Play, which enters its third season in 2026 and has quickly become an immensely popular competition with full fields over the last two years.

Last year, the WPGA added a new tier to its Women’s Amateur Championships, a Mid-Amateur Championship, for female players ages 25 and older. The Association also expanded its Inter-Club Finals in 2025 to include the Inaugural WPGA Women’s Inter-Club Finals, to run concurrently with the Jamison Cup Inter-Club Finals for male players.

Registration for all WPGA competitions and championships begins on March 18 at wpga.org.
