VERONA — 13 players advanced to the 41st WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Thursday’s qualifying round at Green Oaks Country Club.
Brendan Shaughnessy and Robbie Denove each shot 3-under scores of 68 to share the top spot on the leaderboard.
Shaughnessy, a member at Southpointe Golf Club, overcame an early bogey with five birdies throughout the duration of his round. Denove, an Oakmont Country Club member, moved from even par to 3-under with three straight birdies beginning with the 11th hole.
Only one other player finished under par, as Sewickley Heights Golf Club’s Anthony Muscato was 1-under.
Nate Yackovich, Jon Merriott, Eric Herzing, Ryan Meyer, Brady Smith, Chris Sabol, Derek Mousseau, Kyle Grube, Evan Yue and John Marconyak all qualified, as well.
Seven players competed in a playoff for three alternate spots.
Logan Vietmeier secured the top alternate spot, with Christopher Kupniewski and Sam Brourman wrapping up the final two alternate spots.
Two more qualifying rounds are set for this summer, with Nemacolin Country Club hosting a round on August 12 and Totteridge Golf Course hosting on August 20.
The WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship was developed in 1985 and has celebrated over four decades of strong competition for Western Pennsylvania golfers ages 25 and over.
