MEADVILLE — Alan English was a bit unsure if he’d sign up for the third and final WPGA Senior Series event of 2026. But he found a couple forms of motivation that convinced him to make the lengthy drive to Meadville.
English completed a sweep of the Super-Senior Division of the WPGA’s third Senior Series competition Thursday, shooting a 3-over score of 75 at The Country Club of Meadville, taking his third such victory this season.
“I’ve been driving it really good this year and I’m a good putter,” said English a member at St. Clair Country Club. “Plus, I’ve been playing a lot of golf. I only work one day a week, now. So I get to play a lot.”
English’s win follows Super-Senior Division victories earlier this year at Hannastown Golf Club and Latrobe Country Club. It is believed to be the first time a player has won the Super-Senior Division three times in one season.
“This is why I came up,” he said. “I’ve been playing in these for a long time and didn’t think that anyone had gotten three of them in a year. I said, ‘yeah, I’m going to go up and try to get a third.’”
There was some added inspiration for English, as well. A Meadville native and Meadville High School graduate, he was able to play the course a couple of weeks ago for his 50th high school reunion.
“It kind of refreshed my memory of the course,” he said. “It was good to play. I didn’t know if I wanted to make the long drive. But it’s Meadville. It’s where I grew up.
“At home, everything is about the WPIAL. But the four guys I played with at Meadville all went to college on scholarships. There are a lot of pros in the Pittsburgh area from up here. And there are so many good courses.”
English, who played collegiately at Pitt, edged Mike Trombetta, who shot 4-over. Bob Ofcharka and Joe Cordaro tied for third at 5-over.
In the Senior Division, Todd Renner of Allegheny Country Club shot a 5-over mark of 77 and won a one-hole playoff over R.T. Walker to take the title. Renner, who trailed by two strokes with four holes to play, carded four pars to close his round, forcing the playoff.
Mark Johnson finished third in the Senior Division with a 6-over score of 78.
In the Net Division, Jeffrey Jeglinski of Valley Brook Country Club shot a 2-under score to top Dan Murphy by a stroke. Dave Dongilla and Mark Hammer
“I just love what the West Penn is doing for us older guys and giving us a chance to play in these things,” said English. "It gets you out of the house and playing competitively. We can’t compete with these young guys that kill the ball and shoot low scores.
“But this is a great thing. I love it.”
