VERONA — The first of three qualifying rounds for the 41st WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship is set for Thursday at Green Oaks Country Club.
Over 200 players will compete in the three qualifying rounds, with 76 players in Thursday’s field.
13 players will advance to the 41st WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship, scheduled for Fox Chapel Golf Club on September 8. Three alternate spots will be secured, as well.
Play will begin at 8:00 a.m. from two tees on Thursday.
The WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship was developed in 1985 and has celebrated over four decades of strong competition for Western Pennsylvania golfers ages 25 and over.
The competition, which is 36 holes of stroke play in a single day, has become one of the fiercest competitions on the WPGA schedule each year, and is contested annually on a top course in the region.
Historically, one player has reigned supreme in the Mid-Amateur Championship. Sean Knapp has won a record eight WPGA Mid-Amateur titles, with victories in four different decades.
Nathan Smith – one of the nation’s strongest amateur players of all-time – has won four WPGA Mid-Amateur crowns. Smith has claimed four U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships, three Walker Cups and served as the captain of the United States’ Walker Cup team in 2025.
Ian Bangor, Arnold Cutrell and John Jones registered wins in the WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship three times each, while Frank Fuhrer III, David Brown and Marshall Marraccini have all won the event twice.
The inaugural competition, held at Youghiogheny Country Club, was won by Fred Gibbons, who later became the WPGA’s president from 2004-2005.
Winners of the WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship receive the John Birmingham Trophy.
Two more qualifying rounds are set for this summer, with Nemacolin Country Club hosting a round on August 12 and Totteridge Golf Course hosting on August 20.
