VERONA — For the second straight year, a sizable field will compete for WPGA Women’s Amateur titles.
The 19th WPGA Women’s Amateur, 10th Senior and Super-Senior Women’s Amateur and 2nd Women’s Mid-Amateur Championships are scheduled for Monday at Green Oaks Country Club in Verona.
Many of Western Pennsylvania’s premier amateur players will compete in the top WPGA contest for female golfers in the region, which has seen a long list of strong players claim victories in the event.
“The WPGA is excited to welcome such a talented and deep field of players to Green Oaks Country Club, which will set a fantastic stage for this major championship,” said Terry Teasdale, executive director of the WPGA. “As we continue to observe nationwide growth in female participation in the game, we are also seeing it locally, and this year’s WPGA Women’s Amateur Championship field is once again a representation of that.”
67 players are set to compete Monday, matching the number from a year ago when the championship was held at Fox Chapel Golf Club.
A year prior, when the event was last contested at Green Oaks Country Club, the championships saw just 20 players participate.
“The growth and consistency in participation is a reflection of the expanding interest in the sport among the female demographic, as well as the WPGA’s continual efforts to find playing opportunities for those players” said Carol Onufro, president of the WPGA Board of Directors. “We greatly appreciate Green Oaks Country Club for hosting this event, and look forward to a successful championship Monday.”
The Women’s Amateur Championship and the Women’s Mid-Amateur will be two-round competitions on Monday, while the Senior and Super-Senior divisions will play 18 holes for their championship.
Play for all divisions is set to begin off two tees at 8:00 a.m., with the Women’s Amateur and Women’s Mid-Amateur’s second round to commence following the conclusion of the first round, estimated to be around 1 p.m. Each division will have a gross and net champion awarded.
The first group off of the first tee Monday will feature a pair of prominent players in reigning WPGA Women’s Amateur Champion Emily Holzopfel and two-time reigning WPGA Junior Girls Player of the Year Mya Morgan.
WPGA Girls Match Play champion Brooke Kline, as well as Match Play participants Adalena Robb, Olivia DeGori, Elise Wadas, Makenna Kamnikar and Morgan will all compete.
Morgan will be joined by fellow Team Pennsylvania members Kate Sowers and Cora Hirz in the field.
2024 WPGA Women’s Amateur Champion Marissa Malosh will compete, as will 2023 WPGA Women’s Amateur winner Katie Miller Gee, who will play in the Mid-Amateur division a year after taking the title in its inaugural year.
Last year’s Senior and Super-Senior champions, Jane Wymer and He Soo Kim, will look to defend their titles on Monday, as well.
There will be 22 players in the Women’s Amateur division, eight in the Mid-Amateur division, 23 in the Senior Amateur division and 13 in the Super-Senior Division.
This will be the fourth time that Green Oaks Country Club has hosted the major championship, doing so in 2006, 2020 and 2024.
