PITTSBURGH — There was a bit of déjà vu Tuesday at Chariters Country Club.
For the second straight year, the teams from Oakmont Country Club and Sewickley Heights Golf Club claimed the WPGA’s Jamison Cup and Women’s Inter-Club Finals, respectively.
In the 37th Jamison Cup, Oakmont’s team of Anthony Lioon, Chad Warmbein, Davis Kittsley and Todd Berglund shot even par to take the title by two strokes over Chartiers Country Club’s team. The win is the 11th for Oakmont in the 37 years of the event's history and the club's fifth in the last nine years.
Alec Stopperich, of Valley Brook Country Club — which placed third as a team — won the individual title with a 3-under score of 67.
“I drove it well today,” said Stopperich, who recently claimed Valley Brook’s club championship. “These fairways are pretty hard to hit, but I found a little cut that I just rode all day. If you hit the ball in the fairway out here, you’re going to be able to hit some wedges in there close.”
Chartiers’ Barry Torau, Oakmont’s Lioon and Warmbein tied for second at 1-under.
Stopperich, despite his team not claiming the team title, was proud to represent his home club in competition.
“The West Penn itself has so many great, local clubs in the area and a lot of the guys know each other,” he said. “We played with each other at our clubs a lot of the time and have good relationships with each other.
“But being able to come out here and wear the Valley Brook logo is something that I'm always super proud of. It's been home to me for the last 18 years. So coming out here with those three other guys is always a good time.”
In the Women’s Inter-Club Finals — an event added to the WPGA schedule last year — Sewickley Heights’ team again rose to the occasion.
Kathryn Katawczik, Colleen Schild, Michelle Mankey, Danielle Proctor, Caitlin Ross and Kathy Farrell scored 118 Stableford points to earn the top spot in the competition which takes the four best scores among the six players.
Longue Vue Club’s team finished second, while Oakmont Country Club placed third.
Sewickley Heights team captain Danielle Proctor won the women’s individual title with 33 Stableford points.
“The course was playing really, really good,” said Proctor, who shot a 3-over score of 73. “It's probably the best condition I've seen it. Challenges today definitely were the greens. They were rolling true, rolling fast.
“I just fortunately had a hot putter today and was able to navigate the greens.”
Proctor also had the marquee moment of the tournament, sinking an approach shot on the Par 4 10th hole.
“I did not need to use my putter,” she said with a laugh. “I was able to hit it in. I had 160 yards out after my drive. It looked good going in. I thought it would just settle right by the pin, and then all of a sudden it just disappeared. That was fun.”
Proctor was proud of the entire team’s effort in addition to her own. And enjoyed the chance to connect with players from other clubs in her group.
“We overall had a great team this year,” she said. “We get really filled up with all of the individual championships. Having a team event, it’s fun. I love team event when everybody can come together.
“Plus, I got to meet a new person in my group. That's why I love West Penn, you always meet new people.”
