GROVE CITY — A large field was met with perfect September conditions on Monday in Grove City for the Third WPGA Women’s Triple Play.
The team of Gretchen Ross, Kelley Wasicek, Marcy Smorey and Phyllis Davidson ran away with the Net Division Championship, taking the competition with a 13-under score of 123 at Grove City Country Club.
The group was led by Ross, whose score of 98 net adjusted to a 73. Smorey posted a net score of 74 and Wasicek carded a net 78.
The team of Jeanne Howard, Kathleen Minnock, Mary Jo Simon and Suzan Dunn placed second at 7-under. Defending champions Judith Mazzitelli, Madeline Wahl, Mary Ann Howard and Tiffany Reed ended up third at 6-under.
On a cooler, yet sun-soaked and breezy afternoon, Grove City Country Club provided a strong test for the field of 96 players — the largest turnout in the competition's young history.
In the Gross Division, the team of Caitlin Ross, Danielle Proctor, Kathryn Katawczik and Kristina Sandherr shot 3-over. Proctor’s mark of 74 was the best individual score of the day.
The team of Amy Gierlak, Ariadne Hart, Georgia Capotis and Steph Urban finished second in the Gross Division at 6-over. Urban’s mark of 75 was the day’s second-best individual score.
And the group of Annie Vanzant, Carol Onufro, Mary Beth Morrissey and Claudette Graham placed third in the Gross Division at 15-over. Onufro is the current president of the WPGA Board of Directors, while Graham served as the Association’s president in 2017.
The WPGA Women’s Triple Play began in 2024 to coincide with the growing demand for women’s golf competitions in the region and beyond. Participation has expanded from 80 players in 2024, to 88 players a year ago, to a completely full field of 96 players this year.
