A golf tournament with added, historic meaning, the 77th WPGA Brothers Tournament is set for Friday at Shannopin Country Club.
The contest — consisting of 18 holes of Chapman format stroke play — will tee off at 8 a.m. with 28 teams set to compete. The event features a gross and net division for competitors.
The only competition of its kind in the country, the WPGA Brothers Tournaments were started in 1950 to honor two brothers killed in battle during World War II.
Since then, the Brothers Tournament has become a yearly way of honoring the two men and celebrating the bond formed by family.
The first Brothers Tournament was won Bud and Dick Semple, for whom the Association's WPGA Semple Century Foursomes Championship is now named after.
Brothers Chick and Robert Wagner have won the event a record 11 times. Impressively, their wins have spanned four different decades with the first coming in 1979 and the most recent coming in 2017.
The Wagner brothers will tee off Friday at 8:50 a.m.
A year ago, the team of Ronald and David Denunzio won their fourth WPGA Brothers Tournament. The Net division was claimed by Shane and Troy Susnak. The DeNunzio brothers will look for their fifth title Friday, as they tee off at 8:10 a.m.
Also included in this year’s field is the team of Alex and Nick Turowski. Nick, a rising junior at West Virginia, has excelled on the collegiate scene following an accomplished junior career in Western Pennsylvania.
2021 champions Ryan and Tim Ungarean are in the field, as well.
