CANONSBURG — Started in 1959, the WPGA Boys Championships have introduced many of Western Pennsylvania's top young golfers to championship competition.
On Thursday, 29 youth golfers from across the region will compete in the 66th WPGA Boys Championships at Lindenwood Golf Club.
The competition is 18 holes of stroke play, with three divisions for boys ages 14-15, 13 & Under, and 8-10.
The 14-15 age group will compete for the James "Skipp" Potts Trophy, while the 13 & Under division will play for the James Simons Trophy.
Several familiar faces return to this year's championships. Max Scally is back to defend his 13 & Under title after earning the division championship at Latrobe Elks Golf Club in 2025.
Jonah Honess, last year's 10 & Under champion, moves into the 13 & Under division this year, while 2024 13 & Under champion Colin McKenzie also returns to the field.
With last year’s 15 & Under champion Bailey Donahue having aged out of the event, a new overall champion will be crowned on Thursday.
This will be the third time that Lindenwood has hosted the WPGA Boys Championships. Jonah Schollaert won the title at Lindenwood in 2023, going on to win the WPIAL Class 2A championship two years later. Aidan Oehrle took the title at the Canonsburg club in 2018.
The WPGA Boys Championships serve as an introduction to the Association's championship program. It is open to junior boys ages 15 and under who reside in Western Pennsylvania or belong to a WPGA Member Club.
The Championships have compiled an impressive list of local players who continued to capture titles after serving their apprenticeships in junior golf.
The event has produced an impressive list of champions who later enjoyed distinguished amateur careers.
Former champions include Nathan Smith, a four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur Champion, Arnold Cutrell, a six-time individual WPGA champion, and William Miller, who captured both the WPGA Boys Championship and Junior Championship in 2004.
Two players have won the Overall Championship twice, John Aber (1983-84) and Donald Thomas (2002-2003).
Tom Nettles (2007-08) and Luke Miller (2009-10) each won the 13 & Under Division twice, while Miller joined Donald Thomas and Easton Renwick as the only players to capture titles in multiple age divisions.
