ERIE — The final WPGA Amateur Championship qualifying round is set for Thursday at Lawrence Park Golf Club in Erie.
51 players are set to compete in the single qualifying round, with 17 spots and three alternate positions up for grabs for this year’s West Penn Am.
The 126th WPGA Amateur Championship is scheduled for June 8-9 at The Kahkwa Club in Erie.
The WPGA has already conducted two Amateur Championship qualifying rounds earlier this spring. Wade Boyle led the pack in the first WPGA Amateur qualifying round on April 22 at Latrobe Elks Golf Club. Nolan Shilling took the top spot at last week’s qualifying round at Willowbrook Country Club.
On Thursday, play will begin at 8 a.m. from both the first tee, with the final starting time scheduled for 10:40 a.m.
Several accomplished amateur players will be in the field Thursday, including Colton Lusk and Nicholas Haught, who combined to finish second in Monday’s WPGA Brand Foursomes Championship at Longue Vue Club.
Now in its 126th year, the WPGA Amateur Championship dates back to the Association’s first year, 1899, and is one of the oldest regional amateur championships in the country.
The Kahkwa Club, which will host the West Penn Am, has also hosted several USGA national championships throughout its history.
The WPGA utilizes three qualifying rounds to round out the field, with qualifying players joining exempt players for the 54-hole, two-day major championship.
