JOHNSTOWN — Sunnehanna Country Club will welcome a loaded field of amateur golfers Monday, as they hope to punch tickets to the next round of 126th U.S. Amateur Championship qualifying.

The Local Qualifying event will be an 18-hole competition with 13 spots in the Final Qualifying stage on the line. Two alternate positions will be earned, as well.

Once advanced, spots will be won in Final Qualifying for the 126th U.S. Amateur, set for Ardmore, Pa.’s Merion Golf Club from August 10-16.

A number of accomplished Western Pennsylvanians will compete as part of the 140-player field, with play beginning from two tees at 8:00 a.m. in the first wave of competitors. The second wave of players will tee off at 1:00 p.m.

The U.S. Amateur Championship is one of the country’s longest-running golf competitions and is the top national championship for amateur golfers. It has been played since 1895, only pausing for two World Wars.

Western Pennsylvania has traditionally been well represented at the U.S. Amateur, including wins by Eben Byers, William C. Fownes Jr, Arnold Palmer.

Three years ago, Pittsburgh’s Neal Shipley finished runner-up, earning exemption’s in the U.S. Open and Masters Tournament in 2024, where he won Low Amateur honors.

Some of golf’s greatest figures have won the U.S. Amateur, including Bobby Jones, who claimed the event a record five times. Tiger Woods claimed the title three straight years, becoming the only player to accomplish that feat.

Jack Nicklaus, Chick Evans, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau and several other major champions have picked up victories in the U.S. Amateur.
